At the prices they are charging for this case I can't recommend getting it over the JONSBO N3. It's way cheaper, holds 8 drives and uses a more standard SFX PSU.

Another option is this 8 bay NAS case which I have on order, but haven't tested yet (so buy at your own risk), but it supports mATX boards which is a pretty big advantage. Watch the shipping cost as some sellers have it crazy high: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DEgF1oh

7:08 one use-case for an internal USB like that was a quick and dirty way to plug USB devices inside a PC case, with no external way to get at them and then locking off the case so it can't be opened, or you literally fill all external USB ports with solid block medium to stop them being used and hopefully harden the installation of the machine. This for the work I did was in installing information kiosks and point of sale machines, internally they had a data pack USB which "dynamic" content was inserted and it changed the kiosk content (no internet, no wifi, remote installations waaay out in the middle of nowhere and you didn't want any old USB being inserted into your machine 😄).
Great video! Ah, so then I definitely want to take the board out and build my own 2/3/4U box with Noctua fans. I'm thinking TrueNas Scale myself. Maybe the two M.2 slots would work well with a pair of small NVME drives for a boot pool. 🤔
Gbit Ethernet is slow. If ypu want to Access a nas storage , gbit Ethernet is insufficient. About 130 mbyte per sec at the very best in theory. And thats very slow.
8:50 of course Firewire/IEEE1394 controller and some bang-for-a-buck pro audio equipment
Cats like boxes :) [ those who reach the end of the video will understand ]
nice idea man. I have a n4 jonsbo and the rear fan is really terrible. I am gonna add try and add a 140mm like this,
Yeah, those 2 non-hot swappable drives on the side get zero air with them out of the airflow path and with all the PSU wiring there. I'm (slowly) editing my N4 review and I wasn't impressed over the N2/N3. :P
My Asus B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi II has a Wi-Fi 6e/BT 5.2 (or 5.3 according to Windows) card there, but I found that the M.2 slot actually just uses PCI-e 2.1. So, if it's x2, 1GB/s max theoretical speed. Which, ya know, it's fine... WI-Fi 6e can't touch that. That little 2x S-ATA port would fully saturate the PCI-e x2 lanes IF ya were copying files from one S-ATA drive to the other on the same M.2 adapter. Even then, depends on your S-ATA drives. Some are 550MB/s read/500MB/s write and some are 500MB/s read and less. But, yeah, technically, PCI-e 2.1 x2 can handle whatever ya throw at it. Now, on this, you mentioned it isn't technically x2. It's 2x x1. I didn't see that in any literature on my board but curious if it's the same.
THANK YOU !! I was looking for a M.2 adapter for a SIM card like the one you show at 7:24. I have an old laptop that I travel with (old, small and cheap so it is not an issue if something happens to it) and I wanted to add cellular internet to it to not be reliant on external dongles.
Watching this today (May2024) and it's like you predicted the N3 lol
No one could predict the terrible N4 though. haha
in 6.06 well that is the thunderbolt setup so if you conect a device witout thunderbolt support it will route the signal to the usb port if does it will go to pci-e connector
sata express if a fast interconnect so you can make a cluster of pcs
y wonder if you could desolder the cpu from the carrier board and install it to common server motherboard
Nope. Totally different interface and motherboard design.
@@PeterBrockie we don't know that y would do it
About the wifi... Is it better to install/use the Wifi card and antennas or use a usb wifi dongle?
M.2 is usually going to be better (PCIe connection vs usb) and has better antennas (usually).
I have a z-170a with 2 of these ports too bad they are basically useless
N100 is better
Than the J6412/13? Yeah, of course. It's newer, but it also costs more.
This is a slightly older video. But there is now an M.2 card that allows you to plug in a tiny flash drive like the 'Ultra Fit' by Sandisk. They are slightly harder to find but they do exist as I have seen them
Very Cool . I just picked up a 1 to 5 duplicator to do this very same thing . My use Is just a NAS Box attached to a SFF Lenovo p330 Gen2. I'm wondering though, what low profile PCIE card to go with .? I would like to run externally from SFF LENOVO to DupeCase . sff 8088 to 4x sata. Any insight would be great.
The 9207-4I4E works well and is available in low profile. Just make sure you have enough room for a fan to keep it cool. LSI controllers like to cook themselves. :D
@@PeterBrockie copy that House Cat. The connector is called an "sff 8088" on that card correct?
@@Spoolingturbo6 Yep. The external one. The internal connector is SFF-8087.
I used something similar to the last adapter to connect an external gpu. Obviously with additional atx power supply. Worked as good as it could work in pcie3x1
Can you add a ssd adapter
Jonsbo also came out with an 8 drive N3 case recently it seems decently bigger to move the PSU
Already reviewed it! ua-cam.com/video/h3NaFWU2YdI/v-deo.html It's a pretty good case. I think there are better mATX 8-bay options (which I'll have a review out for soon), but it's a solid case. The N4 which I'm currently reviewing seems like a major step back and is basically trash. So who knows what direction they're going with stuff...
@@PeterBrockie Thank you! Sounds interesting. I'll check out that review and look forward to the one about the N4
The point of not including a bigger fan is likely to keep the small cube size/shape. Its about 20% smaller volume than the N1 and is pretty much a perfect cube. If you want better cooling there are bigger options (like probably the N1)
I just found one and can't wait to get inside.
I've bought silicon power ud90 500gb. Res LED is always blinking, idle, or writing it's always blinking rhythmically, it doesn't change the pulse. is that ok?
How do you get around transcoding with the AMD chipset? Edit: sorry continued watching and noticed you mentioned plex which was what I was going for with this build. Any recommendations for hardware for a plex server/ NAS? Edit2: Haha continued watching so a supermicro x7spah?
If you're looking to do Plex, really any reasonably modern Intel board with an iGPU will work. You just don't get ECC memory on their consumer boards.
@@PeterBrockie was looking for a Z490M-ITX/ac but cant find any in US, I guess whats your gripe with non ecc memory? Most of the consumer memory is non ecc for personal pcs is it not? I thought most ECC memory went into servers and enterprise workstations ? I dont even think synology uses ecc unless your spending thousands for enterprise level equipment?
ECC is highly recommended for ZFS (TrueNAS), and really any server. However, I am moving away from worrying about it - especially in a homelab. I wouldn't really recommend tracking down an old board unless you really really need something on it. I'd personally grab a cheap ITX 12th Gen Intel board with whatever basic features you need (dual m.2, 2.5g ethernet, etc) and a cheap 12-14th Gen CPU in your budget. Older motherboards tend to be way overpriced or hard to find. A new motherboard (even a cheap one) will come with newer I/O, use less power and probably be about the same price. When 12th Gen came out I sold off my old 8th Gen stuff and actually made a profit after buying the 12th Gen to replace it. People pay way too much for out of date hardware just because they have an old cpu they want to use, etc.
I don't think of ever need any of this, but the video was genuinely interesting. Thank you for making it.
Thanks for this review. Which model Noctua CPU cooler is that? Wish there was a way to filter by height on their website
PC Part Picker is great for stuff like that. Just do a search for coolers and you can limit by height and brand. Also works great for GPU length. pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu-cooler/ I'm pretty sure the cooler is a Noctua NH-D9L.
You saved the best for last good sir! 👍
some of these could be useful in industry settings not home pc as interfacing with a lot of old equipment needs legacy components
I'm looking for one that just has Bluetooth
24:27 back when they still held a charge at all
Maybe we can have M.2 A E splitter cable sonwe have two M.2 AE 1x1 slot.
Ah the Itanic lol.
Hi. Motherboard bios in some cases limits M.2 WiFi to certain device types. In my case it accepts any network adapters, but does not see video cards.
nice! i love nieche exentric tech so much!
Did you get the Sagittarius 8-bay case from the description yet? There really isnt anything about it out there. My main concern about it is the PSU location right over the CPU, which severely limits cooling options, especially if i want to use it for more intensive tasks.
It absolutely can't take a large cooler. It's clearly designed to have a cpu for Nas tasks only. An AMD stock small cooler fits with like 1mm of space (not recommended). It might be able to take a 120/240 AIO, I will try and measure for it when I film my review in a couple days.
@@PeterBrockie Thats what i thought. I was thinking of running my home lab on it as well as a few game servers like minecraft or palworld, all under proxmox. I have also found a similar system, the Auriga 6-bay NAS chassis. It seems to have the same PSU limitation. I thought about using an SFX/SFX-L PSU just to get a little bit more space, but honestly i dont know if its worth the squeeze compared to going with something else entirely like the Silverstone CS382 which is a full Mini-Tower with hot-swappable drive bays.
Great platform if you can make use of the AVX-512 instructions. Otherwise, power efficiency is quite bad compared to AMD Epyc.
Server motherboards usually have an internal type A for booting, that M.2 would be handy if you wanted to cheap out with a consumer motherboard and didn't want to bother with a PXE server.
I have the wifi card at 0:50 but my pc dont have the AE M.2 SLOT. Is there any adapter that converts the AE KEY TO PCIE.?
Where do you get those storage boxes for the m.2 ssd?
I dont understand NAS storage being reviewed here! I have an Iomega StorCenter px4-300d from years ago with 4 4tb HDD and only thing I had to upgrade was memory. Do all NAS need you to buy computer board, memory and power supplies????
This is a NAS case. It doesn't have any CPU, etc. There are lots of pre-made NAS systems though. Synology, QNAP, etc.
Ok. Thanks for the clarification. I prefer to buy pre-made. My nas may be old but its got 16TB and 8 meg memory and connect thru my lan.
Merci.
Very Cool .. Thank You for sharing .. Cheers :)
Thanks for the video!
thinking about putting there i5 12400 and RX6400 single slot low profile card (the best you can fit in there), and put 4 2.5 SSDs of 2Tb each (which are laying around rn), for RAID 1. Perfect build, tbh, to configure as store for valuable work data. And maybe some classic vidya
I bought the u-Nas 810a. Both take matx motherboard but another huge difference is way expansion cards are supported. U-Nas needs a pci-e extension cable per card while Audhed supports 1/2 height cards
Can use this? 05:56 ?
Well sata power connector can deliver about 54wats max i am pretty sure that is enough for 8 drives :)
I'm pretty sure 54W is the max 3.3v 5v and 12v rails combined. The issue is that nothing uses the 3.3v rail, so that's gone and the startup current on the drive motors is quite high. Hard drives usually idle 5-7w each, while adding a couple more for actively reading/writing and even more at startup.
Just flip CPU fan upside down and you good to go. It will blow hot air up und pull fresh air through filtered slots
It's a different interface for the same bus (PCIe)... so I don't get its usefuleness, maybe it's cheaper in construction? It will confuse people though, its PCIe bandwidth is not mentioned, at least with the classic PCIe interface you can tell. With this, unless they label it, you can't. You'd be silly to connect a wifi card on PCIe with so many lanes to accomodate an NVMe drive. It might replace the PCIe interface as things become smaller, but it needs to be labeled, how many lanes, what''s the bandwidth.
It's simply a case of primary use. The wifi slots need USB, and PCIe. But they don't need SATA. They also need fewer PCIe lanes in general. So they have a different keyed connector to allow for it.
